"Experiences that mold us and shape our lives"
The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of St. Stephen’s will host a salad lunch and spiritual workshop featuring Sandra Carlman, Christian collage artist, from Austin, Texas. The luncheon and workshop will be Saturday, April 24, 2010, from 11:30 A.M. – 1:30 P.M. in the Parish Hall. Tickets are $12 each and there is limited seating. To make a reservation, please call (936)257-9000 by April 17, 2010.
Sandra Carlman has a BS in Art Education and an MA in Art – painting and drawing. She taught art in public schools for 21 years. She says she had never entertained the idea of being a Christian artist until her son died tragically from an overdose of alcohol and heroin. Art became her personal and private grief therapy. Carlman said her faith sustained her and just naturally became an integral part of her art. Carlman’s work began very simply as she made thank you cards of layered, mostly torn papers, to send to friends who supported her and her husband through those difficult times. Soon afterwards she began making collages and started having showings in churches in Austin. Carlman retired from teaching in 2004 and is now a full-time artist. Those attending the luncheon and workshop will get to make a collage. All supplies will be furnished at no extra cost. Proceeds from the lunch and workshop will be used to help and assist children in Liberty County who are in need of clothing and school supplies and to send children to camp. St. Stephen’s ECW also supports a military troop and provides funding for Red Cross and other non-profit organizations.
